Jol targets Berba's pal

">

Bulgarian midfielder Martin Petrov last night issued a come and get me plea to Tottenham. The Atletico Madrid star, a close friend of Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, is aware that White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol is on his trail again after failing with an £7.5 million bid a year ago. This time around they might have to fight off competition from Manchester City, especially as Jol might be able to pick him for a knockown £5m given a recent injury and Atletico's rich midfield reserves.

But Petrov, 28, seems to have his heart set on a move to north London after recently recovering from cartilage trouble. He said: "I know about the rumours linking me with Tottenham but the decision obviously depends on Atletico. "But I have considerations, too. I want and need to play first team football and there is enormous competition for midfield places at the moment. "I am over the injury now but if things become difficult for me I would like to go. Spurs is a big club in England and this season play in the UEFA Cup - that is always an interest to any player. "I am very good friend of Berbatov. We have played in the Bundesliga together when I was with Wolfsburg and also for Bulgaria.
"He is an excellent striker and for me it will be sensational to be in the same club as him and to help Dimitar score many more goals. "I know the Premier League thanks to television and the atmosphere is incredible. So if a good offer arrives it will be very difficult for me to say no. "I think my game would work in England. I have received other propositions from England, and I believe that Spurs have been interested in the past." He is an attacking midfielder with blistering pace as well as good close control and is capable of setting up or scoring a goal out of nothing. Petrov has 14 goals in 64 internationals and in 2006 was voted Bulgarian Footballer of the Year. His current contract runs until 2008 but Atletico sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch said: "Petrov is our player but if an interesting offer arrives we shall certainly study it."

Is Jol going for the right attacking midfielder, or will Manchester City get the bulgarian international? Tell us your comments below...

I think that martin jol is targeting the right players this time round. Martin petrov will be an excellent signing and it seems its in favour of spurs due to Berbatov and the uefa cup place. With pace from petrov and lennon, teams will be cautious of us therefore instilling fear in them. If man city get petrov then i guess he is going there just for money and nothing else. why would he wanna go to city, they have nothing to offer him...

Martin Petrov plays great attacking football, and is great with tall footballers like Berbatov. He has great free kicks ability, and is very sharp on the left side, a place where Tottenham did not impress last season. He plays extremely well with Berbatov, which will certainly help
