LEAGUE TWO COUNTDOWN

HERE'S our guide to the new season in League Two, along with our prediction for where your team will finish. Just scroll down to find your team and then let us know what you think of our verdict.

ACCRINGTON STANLEY

ACCRINGTON STANLEY’S fame came from being named in a milk advert but since their return to the big time, their dreams have turned sour.

Finishing 17th last season was a good indicator of the lack of quality boss John Coleman has in his squad.

And despite the arrival of a clutch of new players — including ex-Northern Ireland international Colin Murdock — they will fare little better this year.

Coleman has been hampered by a lack of cash at a club that stumbles by with an average attendance that would look embarrassing in non-league football.

And his recruits smack of plastering over the gaps rather than building a team on the up. Former Burnley midfielder John Mullin has come in to play alongside his brother Paul and add some midfield guile to the side.

Left-back Chris King has joined from Welsh side TNS, whilst Jimmy Ryan has been brought in from Shrewsbury.

Coleman’s ace in the pack could be Jamie Clark, signed from rivals Blackburn on a loan deal. The teenager was top scorer for Rovers’ reserves last season.

Of the old guard, Peter Cavanagh still has a major role to play in leading the side and keeper Kenny Arthur has to remain reliable to ensure Stanley’s safety.

KEY MAN: John Mullin

SCORE PREDICTION: 16th

ALDERSHOT

ALDERSHOT'S loss of star winger Joel Grant to Crewe will leave them struggling in the middle of the pack.

Boss Gray Waddock has tried to compensate by landing Sheffield United right-back Ben Starosta and Reading midfielder Scott Davies.

But it defender Rhys Day who is still key, alongside new arrival Chris Blackburn at the back.

Non-league midfielder Dean Howell and striker Marvin Morgan have been added to the squad with the hitman looking impressive in pre-season.

KEY MAN: Rhys Days
POSITION: 12th

BARNET

PAUL FAIRCLOUGH has lost star winger Jason Puncheon to Plymouth but has been boosted by Albert Adomah decision to stay.

But the arrival of Gretna midfielder Nicky Deverdics and Bradford striker Luke Medley has done little to improve the squad.

Fairclough will now rely on the kids coming through the ranks and they will be enough to avert relegation. One of those is striker Luke Medley, who comes from Bradford with a point to prove.

KEY MAN: Albert Adomah
POSITION: 10th

BOURNEMOUTH

THE CHERRIES may have new owners but the fear of a second relegation in successive campaigns lives on – especially if Bournemouth are penalised 15 points for breaking insolvency rules.

A transfer embargo stopped boss Kevin Bond from summer shopping until the middle of July and even now he can only sign loan players and free agents.

Defender Josh Gowling has left for Carlisle and left back Warren Cummings also wants out. But former England man Chris Powell could sign up and Darren Anderton has signed a contract extension.

KEY MAN: Darren Anderton
POSITION: 23rd

BRADFORD

THEY have signed free-scoring hitman Michael Boulding to fire them to promotion and his goals should do the trick.

Boulding struck 22 times in a relegated Mansfield side and his efforts will see the Bantams top the table.

Paul McLaren has dropped a division from Tranmere to pull the strings in midfield. And former Doncaster skipper Graeme Lee has joined to boost the defence in a side managed by passionate Scot Stuart McCall.

KEY MAN: Michael Boulding
POSITION: 1st

BRENTFORD

ANDY SCOTT'S wheeling and dealing should edge Brentford into a surprise push for League One.

Spurs defender Leigh Mills is in on loan to add a touch of class at the back and new striker Charlie MacDonald will score goals.

Ex-Millwall winger Marvin Williams’ pace is sure to unsettle defences at this level, while Glenn Poole supplies goals from the middle of the park in a midfield that knows how to battle in this league.

KEY MAN: Kevin O'Connor
POSITION: 6th

BURY

BANDANA man Efe Sodje adds plenty of character to a side that will finish comfortably in the middle of the pack – despite a poor pre-season.

But the razzle-dazzle comes from exciting winger Elliott Bennett, signed on loan from Wolves for a second stint at Gigg Lane.

Any hopes of a shock push for the play-offs will depend on whether Michael Twiss is lured from neighbours Morecambe.

There are no fears of a relegation battle after the capture of defender Ryan Cresswell from Sheffield United on a two-year deal.

KEY MAN: Elliott Bennett
POSITION: 9th

CHESTER

SIMON DAVIES will have trouble keeping Chester out of a relegation battle yet again.

Ryan Lowe’s return is a bonus and Frenchman Damien Mozika adds some spark to a battling midfield.

But a summer transfer embargo has left the club behind in snapping up players.

Experienced duo Paul Butler and Tony Dinning are back in the fold though after being left on the sidelines at the end of last season.

KEY MAN: Ryan Lowe
POSITION: 19th

CHESTERFIELD

GOALS galore are promised from striker Jack Lester and Jamie Ward prompted by new midfield signing Darren Currie.

But there will be little else to be cheerful about as Chesterfield fight to stay away from the battle at the bottom.

Going half-way through pre-season without a senior keeper has hardly brought a settled look to the defence.

Danny Hall has his work cut out replacing impressive Hungarian defender Janos Kovacs, who quit for Lincoln.

KEY MAN: Jamie Ward
POSITION: 17th

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

JOHN STILL completed a major clearout in the summer and that has left the club light on numbers and facing a campaign of fighting out at the bottom.

Staines Town forward Mark Nwokeji has been signed after a prolific year in non-league but it remains to be seen if he can repeat his heroics in League Two.

And the Daggers have been hit by the decision of experienced midfielder Glen Southam to ask for a move – with Coventry interested.

If talented left-back Scott Griffiths is also picked off by Championship vultures it will lead to a season of heartache.

KEY MAN: Mark Nwokeji
POSITION: 18th

DARLINGTON

HAVING missed out in the play-offs last time round, Dave Penney’s side will not challenge again.

He must hope a defence marshalled by Clayton Fortune and Neil Austin is going to be tough to breach.

KEY MAN: Neil Austin

EXETER

NEW SIGNING Marcus Stewart is dreaming of a double promotion for the Grecians — but it could end up being a nightmare season for Paul Tisdale’s side.

Stewart is a major coup for the side that won a spot in League Two by beating Cambridge in the play-off final at Wembley back in May.

His 17 years in the game have included Premiership experience with Ipswich and he is the man on whom Exeter are pinning their hopes.

But despite his 190 league goals, at the age of 35 his best years are behind him.

And the Grecians team of young bucks, whilst showing plenty of enthusiasm, lack quality.

The buzz of winning at Wembley has been carried into the new campaign with the whole city on a high.

But the boys that finished fourth in the Blue Square Premier will be found wanting when the gloss of life in the big league wears off.

Midfield duo Matt Gill and Ryan Harley do not score enough goals to keep Exeter in the top 10 — and that’s a worry for Tisdale (inset).

Young skipper Danny Seaborne and Matt Taylor need to quickly learn how to cope at this level.

Wembley goal hero Rob Edwards will be key in guiding the defence as they prepare for a battering.

And Craig McAllister has been brought in to push Stewart in the goal stakes — although the team is crying out for more League Two old hands.

Keeper Andy Marriott will be wearing out plenty of pairs of gloves.

KEY MAN: Rob Edwards

SCORE PREDICTION: 20th

GILLINGHAM

MISSING out on midfielder kingpin Kevin Maher to Oldham was a major blow for boss Mark Stimson.

And the Gills boss has had a frustrating summer as he fails to bring in new recruits and was unable to get striker Delroy Facey off the wage bill.

New striker signing Mark McCammon will be under pressure to perform and loan capture Michael Burns from Bolton is expected to play a key role.

But a turgid season of battling it out for a mid-season finish is all the Gills faithful can hope for.

KEY MAN: Nicky Southall
POSITION: 13th

GRIMSBY

ALAN BUCKLEY has had a busy break and is rewarded with a side pushing for an automatic promotion spot.

Experienced defenders Matt Heywood and Richard Hope come in to bolster the backline. And Hope’s fellow Welsh cap Chris Llewellyn can add some spark to the front line.

The signing of Robbie Stockdale adds some know-how to Buckley’s new look line-up that is designed to challenge for honours.

KEY MAN: Robbie Stockdale
POSITION: 4th

LINCOLN CITY

BIG Frank Sinclair will add to his tally of football honours by guiding under-rated Lincoln to the play-offs.

Battling boss Peter Jackson knows how to upset the odds, having beaten throat cancer earlier this year and he has promotion experience, taking Huddersfield out of this division in 2004.

Former Leicester midfielder Stefan Oakes has joined from Wycombe to boss the middle of the park and Lincoln have seen off Aston Villa in pre-season.

Striker Kevin Gall is in from Carlisle on loan, although Jackson is also keen on signing Romanian forward Adrian Patulea.

KEY MAN: Frank Sinclair
POSITION: 7th

LUTON

MICK HARFORD talks a good fight when he claims Luton can survive despite their crippling 30-point deduction.

But the facts suggest the Hatters are doomed to finish bottom of the pile long before May.

Leeds may have overcome a 15-point deficit to reach the League One play-offs last season — but that is no comparison

Players are leaving Luton like rats from a sinking ship and with the club only coming out of administration on Thursday, Harford (below) has been unable to sign any new players.

Influential midfielders Steve Robinson and Darren Currie have been released as the club cut costs — and prize asset David Bell has been sold to Norwich.

Calvin Andrew has gone, Matt Spring will spend the season on loan at Sheffield United and keeper Dean Brill could be the next man to leave.

Harford will look to fiery frontman Sam Parkin (right), 27, to give Luton a chance of salvaging some pride by banging in the goals.

Don Hutchison plans to hold off old father time for one more year in his role as defensive kingpin.

But despite the backbone Harford intends to instill in his side, it’s going to be a case of a double relegation for the poor Hatters.

KEY MAN: Sam Parkin

SCORE PREDICTION: 24th

MACCLESFIELD

NOT even a Rooney on the books will stop this Macc side from a nervous season at the bottom.

Wayne’s brother John has been given a contract, and although he has the genes to match his sibling’s ability, he doesn’t posses the genes.

Paul Morgan has joined from Bury on loan and striker Neil Harvey has been given a leg-up from non-league. But Keith Alexander’s decision to go with kids in the main this term is a deathwish for the Moss Rose outfit.

KEY MAN: Danny Thomas
POSITION: 21st

MORECAMBE

SAMMY McILROY has completely reshaped his squad over the summer and a surprise play-off charge is on the cards.

The capture of Peterborough striker Rene Howe on a season-long loan is excellent business. He will team up with Diarmuid O'Carroll, in from Celtic, to make a lethal front duo.

At the back Barry Roche has plenty of experience between the posts, although the expected loss of Michael Twiss is blow.

KEY MAN: Rene Howe
POSITION: 8th

NOTTS COUNTY

IAN McPARLAND can lead Notts County to a stunning turnaround in fortunes after last season’s final day survival.

The Magpies boss has lifted the doom and gloom that surrounded Meadow Lane by bringing in a host of smart, experienced signings and promotion is on the cards.

The new faces have been clicking in pre-season with a flurry of goals — led by new hitman Jamie Forrester.

Spencer Weir-Daley also has a hat-trick under his belt and the pair promise plenty of firepower — especially as they will now be supplied ammunition by experienced midfielder Adam Nowland.

His ability to jink past tackles and spot a pass should carve open flat-footed League Two defences.

Matt Hamshaw partners him in midfield in a combination capable of bossing most games.

The Magpies are looking pretty secure at the back as well thanks to the addition of solid central defender Michael Johnson from Derby.

Goalkeeper Russell Hoult has turned his loan switch from Stoke into a permanent deal, ensuring County have the best shot-stopper in the division.

McParland made way for his bright new world by ditching eight players including the pacy Andy Parkinson and old head Jason Lee.

The clean sweep seems to have done the trick with some encouraging results when pre- season got under way.

So after years of pessimism, Magpies fans can put the champagne on ice as they look forward to a year of joy.

KEY MAN: Russell Hoult

SCORE PREDICTION: 3rd

PORT VALE

BOSS Lee Sinnott is pinning his hopes of a swift return to League One on striker signing Louis Dodds.

But the new man from Leicester will have to be superman to get this Vale side up.

Sinnott now has seven strikers at his disposal although keeping Marc Richards out of the hands of Cheltenham will be important.

The impending arrival of Simon Heslop from Barnsley strengths the midfield and new skipper Sam Stockley marshal the defence well.

KEY MAN: Louis Dodds
POSITION: 14th

ROCHDALE

NOT even brilliant boss Keith Hill can make miracles happen twice and it will be a battle to avoid a relegation fight for Dale a year after reaching the play-offs.

David Perkins was the team’s heartbeat and he’s been lured to Colchester with Ciaran Toner coming in as his replacement.

Halifax Town striker Jon Shaw adds more weight to an attack that could be missing 17-goal Adam Le Fondre by the time the season starts.

And new duo from Darlo, Clark Keltie and Scott Wiseman, are no better than the players Hill motivated to a fifth placed finish last year.

KEY MAN: Adam Le Fondre
POSITION: 15th

ROTHERHAM

MARK ROBINS' band of journeymen do not have enough in the locker to overcome for anything more than a survival bid.

The Millers could start the season with a 15 point deficit and only the shabby showings from their rivals could save them.

Youngsters Reuben Reid and Ryan Taylor look promising but need a hatful of goals to keep Rotherham up.

That’s if the club are even allowed to start the campaign with doubts persisting over their move to Don Valley Stadium.

KEY MAN: Reuben Reid
POSITION: 22nd

SHREWSBURY

THE big-spending Shrews have the quality to run away with the division under new boss Paul Simpson.

He has experience of taking Carlisle through the leagues and has spent well in the summer.

Grant Holt has arrived for £175,000 and striker Richard Walker is a cracking loan signing from Bristol Rovers. Defender Michael Jackson has arrived from Blackpool and will lead the club to an easy promotion.

KEY PLAYER: Grant Holt
POSITION: 2nd

WYCOMBE

PETER TAYLOR can start biting his nails right now as it’s going to be the play-offs again for Wycombe.

Seven new faces and Taylor’s touch of promotion success in the past should guarantee a top seven place.

Lewis Hunt has come in to solve the right back problem and Magno Vieira and Leon Knight have goals written all over them.

Picking up midfielder Nathan Ashton from Fulham is also an astute bit of business for the upwardly mobile Choirboys.

KEY MAN: Leon Knight
POSITION: 5th

There are 24 teams in this league. We might have had 30 points deducted but we're still here despite the best intentions of the fa/football league. We might surprise a few people including the clown butler too!

Bradford/shrewsbury/wycombe/chesterfield/Rochdale

These 5 teams will be fighting for top three

Notts county for third is the funnest thing ive heard in years ill take any bet you want they dont finish above 12th.

Rochdale were not just a one man team (perkins) yep he was great for us last year. But all in all after watching dale for many years this team is young and very very capable of at least the play offs again if not third!! after bradford and the shrewsbury!!

now when my preditions for the five clubs battleing it out for top three come true i expect the NOTW to give me a call before next season and ask just who will be going up (and it still wont be Notts county)

i think that these predicitions are shocking and i can't believe anybody would predict such rubbish! Chesterfield 17th we beat sheff wed 1-0 the other day we have just signed tommy lee and alan goodhall and tommy lee as played well a real good agile keeper and we had scott flinders on trial he was good and the defence as injuries but we will be good defensively once we start are league campaign!

Grimsby 4th did you just pull team names out of a hat

Chesterfield 17th? Is somebody having a laugh!
We finished better than that last year with an awful defence! Yes we have a new keeper and new look defence but with the experience of Robert Page & Kevin Austin we can't be any worse. Not a big fan of our manager Richardson but you have to praise him for having the balls to get rid of the weak links, Lester and Currie should ensure at least a play off spot.

your prediction for my club luton will be totaly wrong, once bournmouth and rotherham lose 15 points each we will only be 15 points behind them both ,also don hutchinson retired at the end of last season, our saviour kevin nicholls has returned and 5 more to sign tomorrow and many teams offering loan players to help us , the bookies only offering 4/1 on us not getting relegated so they must think we will survive,

what the hell? chesterfield coming below the likes of aldershot and barnet is just utter beep, who did they get to make this? with the likes of page in the center we should do better than we did last time with the young inexperiance kovacs and downes, we also signed Tommy Lee who is a proven keeper at this level

Sorry, but who do you take us for? I'm a Chesterfield supporter and I've never seen such rubbish in my life. 17th?! After signing Page, Austin, Hall and Goodall for the defence? 3 of those were signed from League 1 clubs (Goodall from Luton, who were League 1 last season) and Danny Hall has played for Oldham a couple or so seasons ago. Oh, by the way, Robert Page, a former Welsh international with over 40 caps and having captained clubs in higher leagues coming in as club captain and the main centreback is unsettling the defence? How come?

I'm going to say at least a top 5 finish. As long as we sign a powerful striker then I can't see us going far wrong.

Terrible prediction, chesterfield have signed currie page, austin, goohall, hall and tommy lee, we are alot stronger than last year and the league is alot weaker than last year, we will get 2nd or 3rd not 17th! stupid predictions tbh

bury in top 7 everyone else you have nailed them spot on

Ridiculous prediction, chesterfield 17th, what a joke.
We have one of the best defences in the league, Goodall Page Austin Picken, top 3 for sure.

A joke! Is there another team in L2 which has a backbone of the quality of Page, Currie and Lester??? That's without mentioning Ward, Harsley, Austin.

No way in the world Chesterfield will finish outside the top ten

can't see how you came to this prediction
last year goalkeeper and defence were poor, this year better goalkeeper, and a lot better and more experienced defence, add this with lesters goals should prove to be the ingredients for promotion not relegation, well see who is the closest come may

Bradford, Shrewsbury, Notts County to finish mid-table. Bury to be near the bottom. Exeter and Rotherham mid-table. Gillingham to be in the play offs. Wycombe to be in the top 3.

Can't you do the Conference. That would be good.
