ASHTON TUG-OF-WAR

By ROB SHEPHERD

WEST HAM will resist a bid from Spurs for striker Dean Ashton.

The Hammers are bracing themselves for an £18million offer.

With Robbie Keane sold to Liverpool and Dimitar Berbatov’s future still in the balance, Spurs are running out of time to bolster their strike force before the start of the season.

Tottenham were keen on Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrei Arshavin — but have turned to Ashton after failing to negotiate fees for the Russian stars.

But West Ham’s chief executive Scott Duxbury insisted the England ace, 24, will not be sold as he recently agreed a new £50,000 a week, five-year deal.

Duxbury said: “Hell would have to freeze over for us to sell Dean to a major rival.

“It would be no surprise to us if there are certain clubs who would be interested in him.

“But we worked very hard to put together a deal to keep Dean at the club and he remains a massive part of our ambitious plans.”

£18million??!!

Is it April Fools Day or something?

Come on, get real for crying out loud. Even Spammers would admit he's worth no more than £6m, but WHU would be VERY pleased with £8m. 10 goals in 31 games last season - not exactly whacking um in, is he?

Small time player at a small time club = a marriage made in heaven.

WHY ? Would Ashton want to move to a club!! like spurs .. look what they have done for Darren Bent's career ! spurs have lost one striker to liverpool, one about to leave for Man U ... What was that comment about a small time club ! Top 4 ! ha ha ha

Spurs talk like they are a big club? Champions League you're havin' a laugh! Lasagne anyone???

Dean Ashton will not be going to Spurs. If he were to leave, it would only be for a bigger club who would be able to offer Champions League football in the next 6 years, not to a club who finished bottom half of the table when expected to finish above Arsenal by their fickle fans. Spurs are now a selling club, with Berbatov to go within the next week. That will be 3 decent forwards gone from the club in less than a year. They must be praying Darren Bent stays fit so he can get them 12 goals to keep them around mid table.

As a spurs fan the typical pre season "big up" is on. I think we look good for this season but lets do the talking where it matters, on the pitch and leave the "were breaking in to the top 4" rubbish out of it. As for this story and $18mill for Aston. If it's true the people who do our finances need their heads read. Keane sold for $20mill a proven finisher, for Aston for 2mill less? who comes up with these figures? Henry for 16mill scoring almost every game and $16mill for Bent? People must love it when Spurs come knocking for players.

Deano will stay at west ham oh dear the spuds are panicking you lost out on the russians your hero robbie gone to the scousers berba wants big time football

bottom half of the table for the poor lilywhites again

Oh come on!

That amount of money for an average player playing for an average club.

No thanks. The guy is seriously overrated!

Not sure why Spammers are throwing about accusations of other clubs being selling clubs? Would you like us all to remind you of just HOW many players you've sold to bigger and better clubs? I'll give you a clue: it's more than half a pound of apples 'n' pears me ol' son.

Tottenham will always be a bigger, more glamorous club than West Ham. That's just a fact really. That's why - if we want your best players - we just go and sign them. You can't stop us. Bought Carrick off you for a bag of carrots...sold him on for £18.6m. Bought your idol Defoe for £6m, sold him for £10m. Heck, we even made a profit on Kanoute! If we did buy Ashton - which I doubt - then we'd probably give you £2m+Ghaly - then sell him for £25m when we've made him a decent enough player.

I have to say though, one of the highlights of last season was seeing Darren Bent come off the bench and score the 4th in our 4-0 humiliation of West Ham at the lane. It must be so embarrassing to get humped so badly by such an inferior team as little ol' Tottenham, ay?

Never mind though, I'm sure you won't go down again this season. We did actually miss you when you were playing in the Championship - those 6pts are like Santa trotting down the High Road.

Oh and, who told you Robbie Keane was our "hero" (?) Since when?

If Liverpool want to offer us £20.3m for a very average striker - then yeah, they can have him. In fact, 99.9% of Spurs fans would've paid the air fare to John Lennon Airport!

And sorry to inform you of the bad news, but Berbatov is staying by the way. He always has a field day against West Ham, so don't worry chaps, he's gonna be around a little bit longer to ensure your bubbles are well and truly burst :)

Me thinks TimmyTooShooz(???) is a bitter spud!

Bottom half of the prem for you last season and if you cant get 4 or 5 good players in (to replace the rats fleeing the sinking ship) then its going to be a struggle this season.
If you cant hold on to your best players it seems that YOU are now the selling club, how times have changed :-)

Timmy TooShooz Spurs only managed to get Carrick + Defoe from us as Roeder was an even worse manager than Christian Gross and got us relegated. Funny how Joe Cole or Lampard didn't want to go to your supposed more glamorous club when spurs wanted them.
As for the 6pts a season crap I can't remember the last time that happened. You will never forget the time you needed the points the most and you ended up with nothing! Had to come out with pathetic excuses about why you lost. Ha ha champions league you spurs lot are bigger dreamers than us

i very much doubt spurs are after ashton but while all the hammers are having a go at spurs spending money trying to get into the champions league at least spurs are trying!!!! when was the last time west ham brought a player in his prime or just about to enter his prime from a bigger club?? dyer bowyer etc at least spurs are trying hence modric, dos santos woodgate , bale, hutton , bentley and gomes and if robbie keane or bebrbatov dont want to play for spurs there is not much point keeping them!!!

am i missing something here but didnt spurs finish below us last season with the wonderful berbatov....think they need to get real!

sorry im still laughing at West Ham’s chief executive Scott Duxbury saying that “Hell would have to freeze over for us to sell Dean to a major rival!!!!!!
so what about joe cole , frank lampard and glen johnson " who at the time they thought would be a star!!! also defoe carrick and kanotte by selling all these players who still had their best years ahead of them are chelsea and spurs not west hams rivals!!!!!!

Dean Ahston £18m? - as a football fan and not a supporter of either spurs or Whu, he vastly overrated and not worth a fraction of that.

He's neither fit enough or good enough for anything but the lower reaches of the Premiership. He's certainly not England material. There's simply no quality there and I think West ham will flirt with relegation this season.

It also amazes me that Andy 'diver' johnson has gone to Fulham for £12m. again no quality and the only thing he's good at is diving and taking the resultant penalty.

I see another mega footballer is joining Totterigham the mighty Steve Bywater. My what a transfer coup by them.

The yids love to talk up their champions league credentials, but correct me if im wrong not only finished below us last season despite having a 30+ strikeforce compared to ours, about 12, and when they do get their act together and get a sniff of the top four mysteriously contract food poisoning!!! LASAGNE ooooh, LASAGNE oooh, we laughed ourseves to bits,

when Tottenham got the Squits!!!! Leaky defence, no reinforcements and a £10m goalkeeper with no premierleague experience who is going to get bulldozed by Ashton in the air like every other two bob brazilian keeper ala DIDA, MARCO. Champions league ur larf!!!!

the nw spurs goal keeper might not have any preier league experiance but does playing champions league and uefa cup do???
all the hammers seem to be having a go at spurs for buying players and trying to do better and break into the top 4.. who have west ham brought this season???? what are west hams ambitions for the next 12 months to try and get 45 mins out of kieron dyer??? try to get boa morte to play a decent game?? your manager is favourite to be sacked 1st this season and that says it all about your ambition you have none you are spending no money and when your new chairman came in you got a rubbish manager who in 10 years at charlton done nothing!!!! the only reason you got him was because he played for you about 25 years ago lol

But West Ham’s chief executive Scott Duxbury insisted the England ace, 24, will not be sold as he recently agreed a new £50,000 a week, five-year deal.

Duxbury said: “Hell would have to freeze over for us to sell Dean to a major rival

carrick, joe cole, glen johnson, frank lampard, j. defoe, kanotee
yeah your right you would never sell one of your best players to a rival club!!!!!!!
ha ha ha ha ha ha

Yet another media created story linking Spurs with another striker to replace a player that is yet to leave. Having seen Ashton play for Norwich on a regular basis a few seasons ago I can safely say that although he can be skillfull at times he is slower than your average Hammer fans mentality. This will result in him never be good enough to warrant £18 million. If Berba goes then we will be in the market for a striker but not a slow over valued english player.

Dear Me What a sad lot you spurs fans are (Can't call you supporters as i don't thhink you would know how to support your team , home or away) anyway you would love a player of Ashton's class but sadly for you he will be staying at a bigger and better supported club than you will ever be ...
never mind spurs fans ..just be happy with your mid/lower half finish again .... Come on you Irons

remind me when the last time west ham won something other than a championship play-off final?? Hey, at least you've got regular European footb...oops. Erm, sorry hammers, I'm trying to find something good for you here. You may well have finished above us, but we still managed to have a more rewarding season than you unfortunately. I'd rather be in the frame for finishing top four, even if we don't necessarily do it than have my manager as odds on favourite to get the sack first and have a mediocre season. But thats just me ;-).

Can someone tell me why someone called spurs boy !! was watching Dean Ashton play for Norwich on "a regular basis a few seasons ago" Can@t bear to watch spurs too often a ! I can understand that ! see what a loyal lot of fans you "spurs boys " are

Pointless the Totts signing Ashton - or anyone else for that matter. They'd only sell him to Sunderland somewhere down the track.
