BOLTON made their favourite mistake once again by keeping their UEFA Cup hopes alive with this Reebok draw.

Gary Megson's men can be proud of the battling display that saw them dominate the tricky Portuguese outfit.

But will they still be sticking their chests out in the summer as they contemplate Championship football as a result of a run in Europe's equivalent of the Carling Cup?

There is no doubt the Trotters' European escapade is having a disastrous affect on their Premiership form.

They have yet to win any of the seven Premiership games played in days following a big European night.

EVERTON's last attempt at the Champions League was over before the end of the school summer holidays.

If they secure a top four spot this season, they'll need a crash course in the finer arts of surviving the perils of European football to avoid a repeat.

On the evidence of their 2-0 loss to Fiorentina, finishing fourth won't be a route into the Euro elite, but simply another way of consolidating a UEFA Cup place once the qualifiers are out of the way.

David Moyes has done sterling work at Goodison in unfashionable style, given the demands for instant success in modern football.

BIG TEST FOR RAMOS

WELL, maybe this is where Jaunde Ramos's work really starts.

The man who has won the UEFA Cup for the past two seasons with Sevilla has to inspire Tottenham to score at least twice for an outright win in Holland next Wednesday, or find the net once without reply and then win on penalties.

And judging from Thursday night's home defeat to a first-half Jefferson Farfan goal that's no easy job. Some say that as long as Spurs don't get drawn into a relegation battle it matters little what happens between now and the end of the season.

They've won the Carling Cup, guaranteeing themselves more UEFA Cup football next season. So, job done.

PAUL Robinson was last night described by Juande Ramos as 'magnificent' after a wonderful display that ensured Tottenham's place in the next round of the Uefa Cup.

Man of the match Jamie O'Hara scored the first goal of the game early on, making it look inevitable that Tottenham would progress.

But a second half comeback by Slavia Prague with an equaliser from Matej Krajcik ensured Tottenham had to work hard for the result.

Bolton go through on aggregate (1-0)

BOLTON'S European adventure continued tonight after a goalless draw saw them dump out Spanish giants Atletico Madrid to reach the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

Holding a slender 1-0 lead from last week's first leg, Wanderers produced a perfect defensive performance in the Spanish capital to frustrate the home side and claim a famous scalp.

SPURS head coach Juande Ramos refused to single out Radek Cerny for criticism after the goalkeeper handed his former club a UEFA Cup lifeline.

Spurs were cruising against Slavia Prague and Cerny had little to do at the Strahov Stadium until he dropped David Hubacek's hanging cross with 21 minutes left and David Strihavka prodded in.
