Douglas of Basra

Basra, Iraq

If you’re a Brit it takes a lot of balls to take your flak jacket off in the middle of downtown Basra.

But Douglas Alexander, the International Development Secretary did it today as he did the first-ever Ministerial walkabout on the streets of Iraq.

Don’t be too fooled though, there was enough firepower within easy reach to vapourise any potential threat.

But Douglas was the first man from Westminster to give up the Kevlar to see what life is like on Basra’s river front.

For the past three years no-one from government has been able to breach the walls of the British base in Basra to see what life is like on the streets.

Things are changing quickly here and the report that reaches Gordon Brown in the morning will be of hope and progress.

Read more about what he thought of the experience, and what life is really like here, over the next 2 weeks when the News of the World lifts the lid on the future of Iraq.
