CABINET brothers David and Ed Miliband launched an election double act yesterday in a bid to capture the youth vote.

The forty-something ministers — among the youngest members of Gordon Brown’s top team but both tipped as future Labour leaders — staged the first of a series of joint appearances.

They hit the campaign trail in Basildon, Essex, where Labour MP Angela Smith is defending a 3,142 majority.

Energy Secretary Ed, 40, admits it will be tough getting 18 to 25-year-old to vote after they’ve been turned off politics by the MPs’ expenses scandal.

But he believes tackling issues such as climate change and youth unemployment can attract a new audience. He said: “The biggest challenge we face is to make sure voters young and old realise that this is an election that really matters.”

Foreign Secretary David, 44, said young people now have a real chance to say how the country is run. He said: “This election will see a new, younger generation of MPs sweep into the Commons.

“We have many candidates who are in their 20s and 30s and it will refresh the look of the Labour party and the whole Parliament.”
