Labour leadership race hots up

The Labour leadership race has suddenly got more exciting, with Dianne Abbott wading into the fray this morning.

The news seems to have been well received by most party members.

She is a colourful TV personality which should help put the spotlight back on Labour, and the fact she is a black female brings welcome diversity to a race dominated by white, Oxbridge-educated men.

It also is genuinely unexpected. Journalists all knew the Milibands, Ed Balls and Andy Burnham were going to run, but now the Hackney MP has thrown a curve ball into the contest.

And Abbott has already been stirring up the campaign - by claiming she is standing as the left wing candidate because John McDonnell won't get enough votes.

As you can imagine, that comment didn't go down too well with the Hayes and Harlington MP.
