Aladdin: Musical Masterpiece Edition
By Ian McCreath
Aladdin was made at a time the Disney studio could seemingly do no wrong.
Sandwiched between the technical brilliance of ' Beauty and the Beast and the epic drama of 'The Lion King', Aladdin was the lively joker of the pack.
Fizzing with great characters, a classic storyline and vibrant animation, Aladdin burst into life with the electric pairing of the masterful Disney animators and the explosive comic genius of Robin Williams.
Williams has always been a more reliable comedian than Hollywood leading man.
Playing a cartoon genie gave him the freedom to go wherever his famously scatter-gun brain took him- all the Disney animators had to do was to try and keep up.
The result is simply fantastic entertainment.
But this is much more than just a one genie show. All the necessary Disney ingredients are present and correct together with the best collection of songs since the 'Jungle Book.'
Tunes like 'A Whole New World', 'A Friend Like Me' and 'Prince Ali' combine instant sing-along-ability with fabulous Tim Rice lyrics that always drive the story forward.
The effect is a film which feels more like a genuine musical than most animated features. Fitting then that it's now being packaged as a 'Musical Masterpiece Edition' for its DVD release.
Besides a truly great film you now also get on-screen song lyrics, a lyric book plus bonus musical features.
Aladdin- part musical, part love story, part stand-up routine.
Always 100% Brilliant.
